Witnesses

Witnesses is a screen-print collage (19”x13”) that condemns the non-consensual kiss during the awards ceremony after Spain won the 2023 Women’s Soccer World Cup.

Luis Rubiales, the now-suspended president of the Spanish soccer federation, kissed the player Jennifer Hermoso on the lips during the awards ceremony after Spain beat England to win the World Cup title.

2.21 million people watched the final. 2.21 million people witnessed how Rubiales sexually assaulted Hermoso, and still, Rubiales felt entitled to deny the assault and call the victim a liar. How a victim of sexual assault is going to feel safe about reporting their aggressor when most of the time there are no witnesses or evidence to support their testimony, and when there is an outrageous amount of proof, their credibility is going to be questioned anyway?
